Ricky D. Smith

Ricky D. Smith is an American musician, songwriter and producer. Reared in a Christian home, music consistently provided a harmonious soundtrack for his young life. By age five this young talent was first drawn to drums, and that began his understanding of how rhythm structured, and shaped, the melodies of songs. In short order he voraciously embraced learning the piano, organ and bass guitar.

At seven years old, Ricky’s musical debut was in church on drums next to his pianist/organist/choir director mother. Obviously the treble clef didn’t fall far from the sheet of music. Other hallmarks of his early church concert days included performances with the renowned Billy Preston and with Rev. James Cleveland.

Ricky’s professional career in music began when he was seventeen years old. He earned the enviable position of playing drums and keyboards on tour with the sensational pop-singing family, The Sylvers. That group’s hit-making reputation was at its peak, with no end in sight. This heady experience that Ricky had at such a young age is what many musicians only dream about—screaming fans in stadiums, concert halls, state fairgrounds and on television. That Ricky was able to manage those enormous demands on his musical ability and his personal composure shows a depth of emotional security.

From his experiences with The Sylvers, Ricky earned the respect and appreciation of Leon Sylvers—the man whose skills as an artist and songwriter, and eventually becoming one of the most accomplished music producers in Hollywood, was indeed a stellar endorsement. Ricky’s relationship with Leon Sylvers led to extensive collaborations on many albums. Then after The Sylvers, when Leon became producer-in-chief for Solar Records, and concurrently formed the group, Dynasty, Ricky’s participation was guaranteed. Ricky became a member of Dynasty, and also a significant part of Leon’s own company, Silverspoon Productions. Ricky’s songwriting and record production began, and were on full exhibition, at this juncture.

Later in 1985 Ricky’s introduction to Morris Day quickly led to his playing keyboards on Day’s “Color of Success” album. Then Ricky was enlisted to help assemble the band with Day. The first tour was a resounding success with sold-out crowds all over the world. After that tour, Ricky worked with Morris Day to create an all-girl band—The Day Zs, who were quickly signed to Warner Bros. While all of this was being coordinated, Ricky co-wrote the song “Corporate World” for The Time, with Morris Day and Prince.

Ricky’s characteristic composure, humor and honesty, aligned with his amazing talents, have made him a trusted man. His success is well earned. He is a constantly sought-after musician and consultant. Music is Ricky’s most ingrained language--used to maintain his internal compass and to joyously share with others. His “Adventures In The Land of Music” continues.
